Description

What type of wine it is

Chianti Classico Petrignano by Dievole is an organic red wine that offers a faithful and vibrant interpretation of Sangiovese in Tuscany, within the Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin (DOCG), vinified in concrete and aged in oak barrels. To the eye, it presents an intense ruby red colour, opening its olfactory profile with bold notes of blackberry, cherry, and ripe small wild berries. This bouquet is gradually enriched with elegant hints of plum, wet earth, chalk, and a delicate touch of tobacco. On the palate, it expresses an enveloping and juicy structure, supported by fine and well-integrated tannins, which lead the tasting towards a long, warm, and velvety finish, characterised by a mineral footprint.

Where it comes from

The identity of this label is born within the exclusive Petrignano single vineyard, situated at three hundred and thirty metres above sea level in the territory of Castelnuovo Berardenga. Here, the Sangiovese vines enjoy perfect east and south-east exposure, developing their roots in shallow soils rich in stones. The soils, characterised by limestone rocks, are composed of carbonate flysch and marls. This particular conformation, well-drained and with a high calcium content, infuses the fruit with a marked mineral trace and guarantees a perfect gustatory tension that reflects the area's natural vocation.

How it is produced

Vinification begins with alcoholic fermentation conducted in raw concrete vats at a controlled temperature, to enhance the aromatic purity of the must. Subsequently, malolactic fermentation and a rest of approximately thirteen months take place in untoasted French oak barrels. This production choice elegantly smooths the tannins without masking the natural varietal character, before final ageing in the bottle. The result is a deep and harmonious wine, ideal for accompanying mature cheeses, pasta dishes with ragù, pork-based preparations, and game.

History and interesting facts

Under the careful guidance of oenologist Luigi Temperini, the Dievole winery adopts organic and sustainable agriculture to enhance the authenticity of the Tuscan terroir. The wine comes from the single Petrignano cru, an exclusive plot dedicated to the purest expression of Sangiovese. Acclaimed by international critics and celebrated by publications such as Wine Spectator and Decanter, this elegant Chianti Classico DOCG honours the natural vocation of Castelnuovo Berardenga, embodying the deep soul of Villa Dievole in every sip.

Dievole is a corner of Tuscany that has always been known as a small paradise on earth. Here, the dialogue between nature and man has never been interrupted, and the name itself explains the reason: the root of the name Dievole can be traced back to the meaning of 'God wills'.

The name Dievole first officially appeared in the 11th century, on 10 May 1090, to be precise. In those years, the Icelandic Leif Erikson discovered North America, the Chinese people discovered gunpowder, Bologna opened the world's first university, ,the Normans invaded Rome and Pope Urban II conquered Jerusalem. On that day, we read in the contract of the notary Bellundo that two capons, three loaves and six 'coins of Lucca' of good silver were paid for the annual rent of a vineyard in the divine valley at Dievole, precisely.

In 2012 Dievole began a harmonious and gradual renovation aimed at bringing out the deepest identity of these places. Yesterday's dreams become tomorrow's goals, and ancient certainties are confronted with new ideas. It is an evolution that started from listening to the land and has a common thread: quality.

There are three expressions of Dievole: its vineyards that draw waves on the hillsides, the olive trees that punctuate the landscape with their timeless charm and the warm welcome of the historic Villa - Villa Dievole - an elegant resort where people can experience unforgettable moments.

Petrignano 2019 has been awarded Rosso d'Italia 2023 according to Gambero Rosso. It represents an ambitious project by Dievole, enhancing Sangiovese grapes from individual vineyards in the different nuances of Chianti Classico region.
