Description
What type of wine it is
The Barolo Serralunga d’Alba Vigna Rionda Riserva by Massolino is a red wine that expresses the essence of Nebbiolo grapes grown in Piedmont. This prestigious expression of Barolo, in the Riserva version, offers an aromatic profile that combines fragrances of red fruits and floral notes with evolved nuances of forest floor, tobacco and spices. On the palate, it presents a structured and complex mouthfeel, supported by well-defined tannins and remarkable persistence. Ageing in large Slavonian oak casks helps to shape an elegant character, predisposed to a fascinating evolution over time.
Where it comes from
The grapes are grown in the famous Vigna Rionda vineyard, a natural amphitheatre located in the municipality of Serralunga d’Alba. The rows are situated at about three hundred metres of altitude, where old vines take root in soil characterised by medium-textured calcareous marl. This specific geological composition is fundamental for giving the wine a distinct aromatic concentration and a sharp tannic definition. The territory represents a historic location for Massolino, which cultivates this prestigious Piedmontese area with deep dedication.
How it is produced
Production involves fermentation in oak vats with maceration for about thirty days at controlled temperatures. Ageing takes place in Slavonian oak casks for forty-two months, concluding with a prolonged rest in the bottle. This practice consolidates the wine's texture, making it the ideal accompaniment for full-bodied meats, game and aged cheeses. To best appreciate its nuances, it is recommended to serve it between eighteen and twenty degrees, after an hour of decanting.
History and interesting facts
Founded in 1896, the Massolino winery enhances its heritage through the famous Vigna Rionda MGA, owned by the family since 1956. From this exclusive natural amphitheatre, home to fifty-year-old Nebbiolo vines, comes the prestigious Etichetta Nera (Black Label), produced only in exceptional vintages. Faithful to tradition, the wine macerates for about 30 days and matures for 42 months in Slavonian oak barrels, then rests in the bottle for up to two years. A true masterpiece, awarded 98 points by James Suckling and Vinous.

With tenacity and passion, we have been making wine since 1896.
Azienda Agricola Massolino Vigna Rionda is the dream of our great-grandfather Giovanni, who founded the estate in 1896. In those days, it was a traditional Langa farm, producing fruit and vegetables, raising livestock and making wine.
Our family is firmly at the helm of the historic estate that inhaled the vibrant air full of change of the late 19th century and navigated the tides of the first half of the 20th century. Today, we face the new challenges of the 21st century, in the capable hands of the third and fourth generations.
We are Massolino Vigna Rionda and we are writing a legacy with our wines. Read more
