Description

What type of wine it is

Barthenau Pinot Nero Vigna S. Urbano by Hofstätter is a still red wine from Alto Adige, an expression of the Riserva style, vinified in concrete and aged in barrels. Produced with Pinot Noir grapes, it presents a clear garnet colour. The bouquet reveals elegant smoky notes and hints of redcurrant, accompanied by subtle touches of tar and echoes of wild strawberries. On the palate, it proves to be dense and structured, with a gritty and well-balanced character. The palate is enveloped by soft tannins, supported by a vital acid-tannic tension that leads to a long-lasting finish.

Where it comes from

This wine originates in Mazon, on the cooler slopes of the Bassa Atesina in Alto Adige. The vineyards benefit from an alpine mountain climate, ideal for balancing fruit ripeness and acidic freshness. The soil is characterised by the Werfen geological formation, with mineral rock layers, moraine components and a thin clay surface. Hofstätter’s choice of the Vigna classification highlights the peculiarities of this specific plot, giving the wine a sharp aromatic definition and a gustatory texture of great territorial precision.

How it is produced

The grapes, from Guyot-trained vineyards, are hand-harvested and fully de-stemmed. Vinification involves fermentation in concrete tanks with gentle pump-overs, followed by an initial period in steel. The process continues with a year of maturation in first and second-passage barrels, before moving to steel for stabilisation. The wine then undergoes a further twelve months of ageing in oak barrels, which define its complexity. The process concludes with the final refinement in the historic cellars of Mazon, consolidating its structure and aromatic persistence.

History and trivia

The Barthenau Pinot Nero Vigna S. Urbano celebrates the J. Hofstätter Estate, founded in 1907 and led by the fifth generation. A pioneer of the "Vigna" classification in South Tyrol, the company highlights the identity of each individual plot. Created in 1987 on the Mazon plateau, this red is the estate's first cru, aged in the property's cellars. A wine of international standing, awarded 97 points by James Suckling, it is an expression of Alpine excellence.

The wisdom of generations. The drive to continuously create something new together. Our family winery’s story stretches back to the 19th century. Anticipating the future, just like Paolo Foradori. He once coins the term "Vigna" – marking the dawn of single-vineyard classification in Alto Adige. Pioneering spirit is deeply ingrained in our family heritage. Today, it is led by Martin and Beatrix Foradori Hofstätter, supported by the next generation: Niklas and Emma.

We uphold the highest standards every single day. In the vineyard, this means nurturing our vines through gentle pruning and the use of cover crops to enhance their strength. In the wine cellar, innovation meets tradition, as we age our wines in both classic wooden barrels and modern concrete vats. Cutting-edge cellar technology also plays an essential role in ensuring the quality of our wines.
