Description
Type of wine
The 1502 Sangiovese Superiore Rocca di Cesena Riserva from Cantine Leonardo da Vinci is an enveloping and complex still red wine. This blend of Sangiovese and Syrah originates in Emilia-Romagna and falls under the renowned Romagna Sangiovese Superiore Riserva appellation. On the palate, it is rich and structured, characterised by soft tannins and a pleasant freshness that merge into a balanced sip. Ageing in oak barrels enriches the aromatic profile with elegant spicy and vanilla notes, making it a red with a persistent finish, capable of evolving beautifully over time.
Origin
The grapes for this label come from the suited hills of Emilia-Romagna, specifically in the areas of Castrocaro Terme, Predappio, Meldola, and Bertinoro. The vineyards benefit from optimal south and south-east exposure, situated at an altitude ranging from one hundred to two hundred and fifty metres above sea level. This foothills belt is characterised by significant geological diversity: ranging from clayey soils at the base of the hills to marl-sandstone and skeletal-rich soils as you approach the Apennines. This soil composition gives the wine its unique territorial identity. The wine's name is a tribute to Leonardo da Vinci's travels, during which he observed the historic Rocca di Cesena and the local agricultural richness in these very lands.
Production process
Production begins between the last week of September and the beginning of October, with careful selection and harvesting of the grapes. The bunches undergo a measured drying process at a controlled temperature, during which humidity and ventilation are strictly monitored to encourage the concentration of aromas. This is followed by the fermentation phase, maintained at twenty-six degrees Celsius, enriched by the use of selected yeasts and accompanied by a period of maceration on the skins. Finally, the wine undergoes an ageing period of ten to twelve months, resting in medium-toasted French and American oak barrels, both first and second passage, an essential process to provide roundness and complexity to the final product.
History and curiosities
This wine is part of the exclusive 1502 Da Vinci Romagna collection, a tribute that draws inspiration from Leonardo's meticulous naturalistic observations. The narrative of this label ideally transports us back to 1502, to the heart of Romagna, to admire the absolute excellence of nature and the ancient artisanal wisdom of local winegrowers. This fine product conveys genuine and timeless values that are inextricably linked to the historic Fortress of Cesena. Confirming its charm, the vintage boasts a score of ninety-six.

The original headquarters, restructured and enlarged, are still the operative centre today. The winery is situated in the borough of Vinci, just 5 kilometres from the birthplace of the world famous artist and inventor Leonardo.
The co-operative takes its name from the great man, paying homage to the mind of the man who was universally recognised as a genius and to emphasise its deep-rooted bond with the territory, the same bond which Leonardo felt and whose surname is specifically associated with the village where he was born on 15 April 1452.
Today, Cantine Leonardo da Vinci is a pioneering co-operative, innovative and modern, which relies on the work and grape production of its 160 members. Read more
