Description
What kind of wine it is
Montalbera's Calypsos Derthona is a still white wine that expresses the potential of the Colli Tortonesi DOC with precision and character. Made exclusively from Timorasso grapes, this wine stands out for its intense aromatic profile, where clear notes of quince are accompanied by hints of almond, hazelnut, graphite, and flint. On the palate, it proves to be smooth and balanced, supported by a solid structure and marked persistence, characteristics that give it significant potential for ageing. It presents as a harmonious and satisfying taste, ideal for pairing with fish-based recipes, medium-matured cheeses, or selections of aged cheeses.
Where it comes from
This expression of the Timorasso grape variety originates in Piedmont, within the Colli Tortonesi denomination, a wine-growing area capable of giving wines a distinctive and recognisable character. The vineyards cultivated by Montalbera are rooted in clay and limestone soils, fundamental geological elements for transferring structural depth and a distinctive mineral character to the wine. The grapes come from carefully selected plots across Grana, Castagnole Monferrato, and Montemagno, where the various hillside exposures favour the optimal development of the clusters, defining a white of profound consistency and a marked link to the territory.
How it is produced
The production of Calypsos Derthona begins with a careful harvest of the grapes at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the clusters undergo soft pressing, followed by traditional white winemaking. Fermentation takes place entirely in stainless steel tanks, a precise technical choice to enhance and keep the freshness of the fruit intact. The refinement phase also takes place in steel, excluding the use of wood, thus allowing the wine to define its aromatic harmony. Before being released for sale, it undergoes a further rest period with ageing in the bottle in a horizontal position.
History and interesting facts

In the mid-1980s, the Morando family began expanding their property by purchasing land in adjacent territories and planting it with new grapevines, prevalently Ruchè; they continue to grow their landholdings. Today, a continuous stretch of vineyard-covered land encircles the winery. The vineyards are planted entirely on hillsides, giving the vines different expositions and soil, from clay to limestone.
A unique aspect that has always distinguished Montalbera in the Piedmontese winemaking landscape is that the winery sits astride two of the region’s most important winemaking zones: the Monferrato and the Langhe. Read more
