Description

What type of wine it is

The Toscana Rosso Campo di Tenaglia Tenuta di Trinoro is a still red wine that precisely expresses the character of Cabernet Franc. Produced in Tuscany by the Tenuta di Trinoro estate, it falls under the Toscana IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) designation. It is a structured and complex wine, characterised by an intense aromatic profile and remarkable longevity. The vinification involves fermentation in steel and a composite ageing process, designed to enhance the qualities of the grape variety. On the palate, it is deep, offering a velvety texture supported by fine tannins, making it an excellent match for red meats and game.

Where it comes from

This red comes from the Sarteano area, in the province of Siena, from a specific sunset-facing plot known as Campo di Tenaglia. The vines, over twenty-five years old, are located at an altitude of 550 metres. The soil is deep, well-drained and sandy, enriched by significant limestone aggregates. These particular territorial conditions result in extremely low yields, encouraging an extraordinary aromatic concentration and reflecting the identity of the terroir in the wine's final structure.

How it is produced

The production of this wine begins with viticulture characterised by high planting density and very low yields. After a careful harvest, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks for approximately twelve days. Subsequently, the wine undergoes a two-stage ageing period: it initially rests for eight months in new French oak barrels, then completes its maturation with a further eleven months in concrete vats. This careful cellar management aims to preserve the richness of the fruit and ensure its evolution over time.

History and curiosities

Born from a precious parcel in Sarteano facing the sunset, this exceptional Toscana IGT reflects the most authentic soul of Tenuta di Trinoro. The historic Cabernet Franc vines, over twenty-five years old and with deep roots, sink into a sandy soil with limestone aggregates at five hundred metres of altitude. Thanks to a high planting density and very low yields, since two thousand and fourteen these grapes have been bottled separately to capture the pure identity of Campo di Tenaglia, offering with the vintage a red of unmistakable and refined character.

Located in a remote corner of southeastern Tuscany, Tenuta di Trinoro specializes in rich, age-worthy red wines made of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot. The Estate sits in viticultural isolation in the Orcia Valley near Sarteano, where Tuscany meets Umbria and Lazio.

The Founder, Andrea Franchetti acquired the property in the 1980s and in the beginning of the 1990s started planting his first vines. The most important lesson he gleaned from a stint in Bordeaux was the crucial role played by terroir. He saw, in the rough woodland that would become Trinoro,clay-limestone and gravel soils reminiscent of those in Saint-Émilion. Only select parcels were suitable for vine-growing, amid a sea of blue clay, and those he cleared by hand and planted in the style of the Bordelais: high-density, meter-by-meter plantings, with cuttings brought over from some of the region’s great estates.
