Description
What type of wine it is
Massolino's Barolo Parafada is a prestigious Piedmontese red wine, produced exclusively from Nebbiolo grapes. It presents an intense and deep garnet colour, while the olfactory profile reveals elegant hints of ripe red fruits, withered rose, dark spices and balsamic notes. On the palate, it expresses a full-bodied and austere structure, supported by dense tannins and a distinct minerality, culminating in a persistent finish. The extraordinary structural complexity ensures excellent ageing potential.
Where it comes from
This wine originates from the historic Parafada vineyard, located on the hills of Serralunga d’Alba. The old vines, approximately sixty years old and cultivated using the traditional Guyot system, benefit from a southerly exposure at an altitude of over three hundred metres, ideal conditions for optimal ripening. The soil, characterised by a very calcareous composition with calcareous-marly and sandy matrices, gives the wine a marked sapidity and a rigorous character, making it an authentic expression of the territory.
How it is produced
Production begins in the second half of October with a meticulous manual harvest. Vinification follows the historical methods of Barolo, with temperature-controlled fermentation and a long maceration on the skins in oak vats. Subsequently, the wine ages for approximately thirty months in large oak casks, an essential period for consolidating its structure. The ageing process concludes with a period of rest in protected environments, necessary to achieve perfect gustatory harmony.
History and facts
Founded in 1896, the Massolino winery carries on a centuries-old family tradition, masterfully continued today by Franco and Roberto. This rare red is born in the prestigious Parafada vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, an outstanding cru included in the first category of Renato Ratti’s historic map. Produced since 1990 from sixty-year-old vines grown using the Guyot system on just 1.2 hectares, it offers an experience of pure class. Acclaimed by critics Robert Parker and James Suckling, it embodies an authentic Piedmontese expression.

With tenacity and passion, we have been making wine since 1896.
Azienda Agricola Massolino Vigna Rionda is the dream of our great-grandfather Giovanni, who founded the estate in 1896. In those days, it was a traditional Langa farm, producing fruit and vegetables, raising livestock and making wine.
Our family is firmly at the helm of the historic estate that inhaled the vibrant air full of change of the late 19th century and navigated the tides of the first half of the 20th century. Today, we face the new challenges of the 21st century, in the capable hands of the third and fourth generations.
We are Massolino Vigna Rionda and we are writing a legacy with our wines. Read more
