Description

What type of wine it is

The Barbera d'Asti Bricco della Bigotta by Braida is a still Piedmontese red wine that elegantly enhances the peculiarities of the Barbera grape. Belonging to the Barbera d'Asti appellation, this wine presents a garnet ruby colour with violet reflections. On the nose, it offers a rich bouquet, where notes of plum, violet, liquorice and vanilla intertwine harmoniously. On the palate, it reveals a vigorous and balanced structure, enriched by hints of dark fruits, spices and delicate toasted nuances of coffee, accompanied by a lively freshness and mature tannins, aged in small oak barrels.

Where it comes from

The grapes for this wine come from the single Bricco della Bigotta vineyard, located in Rocchetta Tanaro, in the heart of Monferrato in Piedmont. The old vines benefit from an ideal south-west exposure, growing on soils characterised by a balanced composition of sand, clay and calcareous clay. This specific soil and climate nature gives the clusters an intense aromatic concentration and a pleasant mineral freshness, elements that faithfully reflect the authentic winemaking vocation of the territory.

How it is produced

The production of this wine begins with a twenty-day maceration on the skins, fundamental for the optimal extraction of colour and polyphenols. Following fermentation, the wine ages for a period of between fifteen and eighteen months in small oak barrels, which enrich its aromatic profile. The process concludes with a further year of bottle ageing, necessary to harmonise the tannins and define the final structure, thus ensuring excellent ageing potential.

History and interesting facts

This fine wine originates in the historic vineyard of Rocchetta Tanaro and embodies the true visionary soul of the Braida winery in Monferrato. Since nineteen sixty-one, the brilliant intuition of pioneer Giacomo Bologna has raised the prestige of this famous grape, ushering in a new era for the region's viticulture. Currently, the estate is expertly led by oenologist Giuseppe Bologna, who continues the ancient and rigorous family artisanal tradition. The latest vintage, celebrated with a full ninety-one points from James Suckling, is an authentic oenological excellence.

Braida’s story is linked to that of Rocchetta Tanaro, a small town in the Monferrato area. "My village is not a surprise, it is ten vineyards, six houses, one church": these are the words of the chansonnier Paolo Frola, who is also the local GP in Rocchetta. The song was written with Gianni Mura, drinking the Barbera of Rocchetta. Some of the ten vineyards in Frola’s song belong to Braida. They were owned by grandfather Giuseppe, who left them to his son Giacomo, and now they are cultivated by Giuseppe and Raffaella Bologna. The estate is the product of the enthusiasm, passion and entrepreneurial courage of a bona fide Rocchettese, Giacomo Bologna.

"Braida" was the nickname that Giacomo’s father, Giuseppe Bologna, a professional carter, had earned himself by playing handball, because of his resemblance to the champion of this sport. Along with his father’s nickname Giacomo also inherited his love of the sport and of horses, and a large Barbera vineyard on the Rocchetta hills.
