Description

What kind of wine it is

The Bolgheri Rosso Superiore from the Grattamacco winery is an organic red wine of great depth and remarkable potential for long ageing. Born in Tuscany from a refined blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese, this Bolgheri Rosso Superiore expresses a complex structure and an austere profile, supported by vibrant acidity and velvety tannins. On the nose, it releases intense aromas of dark forest fruits, cassis and balsamic hints of Mediterranean scrub, anticipating a fresh, juicy sip enriched by long and skilful maturation in wooden barrels.

Where it comes from

This prestigious label originates along the coast of Tuscany, within the famous Bolgheri denomination, specifically in the area of Castagneto Carducci. The hillside vineyards benefit from a temperate Mediterranean climate which ensures optimal ripening of the grapes, enhancing the aromatic richness of the bunches. The soils, characterised by a complex matrix of calcareous sandstone and clay, give the wine a marked minerality and a firm acidic backbone, while the estate's pioneering choice to include Sangiovese in the blend gives the product an unmistakable territorial identity.

How it is produced

The production process begins with a rigorous hand-harvest of the best bunches to preserve their maximum integrity. Vinification continues with spontaneous fermentation, conducted by indigenous yeasts, inside small open wooden vats, accompanied by prolonged maceration on the skins to promote optimal aromatic and polyphenolic extraction. Subsequently, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and faces a slow maturation of eighteen months in first- and second-passage barrels, before concluding its long ageing with a further twelve months of rest in the bottle.

History and Interesting Facts

Founded in 1977, the Castagneto Carducci estate boasts over forty years of organic and biodynamic viticulture. This exceptional wine, produced among hills with a Mediterranean climate, is a rare local interpretation that includes Sangiovese in the blend, creating a unique identity. Multi-award-winning in wine guides, its production process involves a rigorous manual harvest and a long ageing period in wood.

A winemaking company of pioneers: the second winery to be established in Bolgheri in 1977; the very first to vinify Bolgheri Rosso, to believe in Vermentino and to enhance elevated vineyards; one of the few to maintain Sangiovese in the blend that gives life to Bolgheri Superiore. In 1994, the authors of the regulations that initiated the enological history of the denomination gathered under the centuries-old oak tree of the farmhouse. Read more
