Description
What type of wine it is
Massolino's Barolo Margheria is a still red wine from Piedmont with Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita status. Aged in oak, it embodies an authentic expression of Nebbiolo grapes. In the glass, it displays an intense garnet red colour, orwarding an olfactory profile defined by ethereal notes of spices, tobacco, wild cherry, and candied orange peel. On the palate, it reveals a harmonious and elegant structure, medium-bodied, balanced by silky tannins and a persistent saline trail. This measured austerity pairs perfectly with game stews, roast red meats, and mature cheeses; it is recommended to decant the wine for about an hour before serving.
Where it comes from
This Barolo originates from the Margheria single vineyard, located in the territory of Serralunga d’Alba. The Nebbiolo vines grow at an altitude of 340 metres with a south-facing aspect, cultivated using the Guyot system. The terroir is distinguished by calcareous and sandy soil, a geological composition that tempers the natural power of the area, favouring a distinct mineral character. The low yields offer concentrated fruit that accurately reflects the geographical identity of the zone. Since 1985, Massolino has vinified this plot separately to enhance its territorial fidelity.
How it is produced
Production begins with a manual harvest carried out in the second half of October. Fermentation and prolonged maceration on the skins take place at a controlled temperature within large oak vats. Subsequently, the wine matures for approximately thirty months in large Slavonian oak casks, preserving the original aromatic purity and integrating the tannic texture. The process concludes with rigorous bottle ageing in cool environments away from light. This final step defines the spicy nuances and ensures solid longevity over time.
History and curiosities
Founded in 1896, the Massolino winery showcases the prestigious territory of Serralunga d’Alba. Since 1985, the family has vinified a single plot of just 1.5 hectares separately to give life to the exclusive Barolo Margheria. Under the guidance of oenologists Franco and Roberto, these noble grapes are transformed into a masterpiece of pure mineral elegance. The excellence of this cru is confirmed by outstanding scores: 96 points James Suckling, 94 Robert Parker and 93 Vinous.

With tenacity and passion, we have been making wine since 1896.
Azienda Agricola Massolino Vigna Rionda is the dream of our great-grandfather Giovanni, who founded the estate in 1896. In those days, it was a traditional Langa farm, producing fruit and vegetables, raising livestock and making wine.
Our family is firmly at the helm of the historic estate that inhaled the vibrant air full of change of the late 19th century and navigated the tides of the first half of the 20th century. Today, we face the new challenges of the 21st century, in the capable hands of the third and fourth generations.
We are Massolino Vigna Rionda and we are writing a legacy with our wines. Read more
