Description
What kind of wine it is
Les Couarres Extra Brut by Chartogne-Taillet is a Champagne crafted using the Traditional Method, from a refined blend where Pinot Noir meets Chardonnay. In the glass, it displays a clear golden colour, heralding a taut and defined sip. Tasting reveals a distinctive spherical roundness and a delicate texture, followed by a fresh finish. This rigorous Extra Brut dosage, rated 93 points by Vinous, reflects a meticulous artisanal approach.
Where it comes from
This wine originates in Merfy, in Champagne, from the single vineyard plot of Les Couarres. The vineyard lies on a south-facing slope, where the organoleptic profile is shaped by tuff and clay soils. The tuff imparts a mineral and stony character, while the clay brings tension and freshness. Chartogne-Taillet cultivates this agricultural heritage with the utmost care for the land, aiming to ensure a faithful expression of the terroir in every sip.
How it is produced
The process begins with the maturation of the base wine in oak barrels for nine months. This stage requires the greatest precision to avoid premature oxidation, preserving the typical consistency of the sip. Following the secondary fermentation according to the Traditional Method, the low residual sugar of 2.5 g/l defines a dry and decisive profile. The Champagne opens slowly, protecting its delicate texture until the end of the ageing process.

The family's wine-making tradition traces back to 1490, with Nicolas Taillet and Fiacre Taillet in 1540. In 1700, a second Fiacre Taillet, a learned winegrower, wrote his memoirs recounting his life and all the important events in the village, his family and his profession. The Chartogne-Taillet family continues this tradition and savoir-faire inherited from this winegrowing heritage. Read more
