Description

What type of wine it is

Contini Vernaccia di Oristano Riserva is a still white wine from Sardinia made from Vernaccia di Oristano grapes. This wine expresses an oxidative style with a warm and enveloping structure, capable of offering a prolonged aromatic texture. Meticulous ageing in barrels kept partially unfilled encourages the natural formation of flor yeasts, defining a profile of great depth. In the glass, it displays a golden coat with vivid amber highlights, a prelude to an elegant bouquet characterised by roasted hazelnuts and almond blossoms. On the palate, it delivers richness and breadth of flavour, closing the tasting with an almondy finish of remarkable persistence.

Where it comes from

The grapes are grown in Sardinia, specifically in the area between the Lower Tirso Valley and the Sinis peninsula. The vines take root in alluvial and sandy soils, characterised by light clay components that lend body and a clear aromatic continuity to the taste profile. The Mediterranean climate, marked by mild winters, scarce rainfall, and hot, breezy summers, creates the ideal environment for the ripening of the bunches. These peculiar environmental conditions guarantee an optimal aromatic concentration within the berries, an essential element for defining the breadth and vigour that distinguish this Vernaccia di Oristano.

How it is produced

The harvest takes place in mid-October, followed by white wine vinification with soft pressing and fermentation at a controlled temperature. The character of the wine is forged during oxidative ageing, which lasts for at least fifteen years in oak and chestnut barrels. As dictated by local custom, the wooden containers are kept partially empty to allow for the proliferation of flor yeasts on the surface. This expert maturation technique shapes an imposing structure, offering an intense, distinctly velvety sip enriched by a fine bitter note that accompanies the finish.

History and Interesting Facts

Produced by the Contini winery, a historic estate founded in 1898, this Vernaccia di Oristano DOC Riserva 1998 represents authentic Sardinian excellence. The limited production of only 2,400 bottles owes its distinctive character to a long oxidative ageing process. Resting for at least fifteen years in partially filled oak and chestnut small barrels (caratelli) encourages the development of the precious layer of flor yeasts. This fascinating and meticulous refinement gives the award-winning Riserva an unparalleled complexity, ideal for moments of pure contemplation.

A name and a number define our company and mark the origins of our story. We are proud to be the first and oldest winery in Sardinia, an honour that we owe entirely to our founder, Salvatore Contini, and his wife Anna Maria Dessì.

Today the company produces a complete range of wines available in Italy and internationally. In 2022 the new Contini winery was officially opened, after a restyling of the spaces with the aim of bringing us into the future and becoming a
home to experiences, a meeting point, and a destination to be discovered.
